You’ll get the opportunity to go behind the scenes with rarely seen images and get the inside scoop from an analog astronaut researcher who simulated a Moon mission in isolation. \nSharife Gacel is an Analog Astronaut\, NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador\, and Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a passion for sharing space with others. As an Analog Astronaut researcher\, she served as the Medical Officer and her ongoing research is titled “The Impact of Crew Isolation and Lunar Simulation on Human Behavior.” \nThe Sol Speaker Series features guest presenters who will cover a wide range of inspiring and informative topics on space\, astronomy\, astrophotography\, the Artemis mission\, stargazing\, and tons more! SUMMARY:STARFLEET Medical Proxima Centauri Step Challenge
DESCRIPTION:We at STARFLEET Medical are very excited to offer this fleet-wide challenge that is open to all members of SFI\, regardless of whether or not you are a member of STARFLEET Medical. Each month\, we will travel along another leg of our journey to explore and establish a human colony in the Proxima Centauri system.  \nProxima Centauri is a red dwarf star that is 4.2 light years away from Earth. As of 2022\, two exoplanets are known to exist within the system: Proxima Centauri B & Proxima Centauri D. Proxima Centauri B orbits within the habitable zone which means that liquid water can exist\, allowing for the possibility of life\, or at the very least the ability of the planet to support a human colony. The purpose of our mission will be to travel to the Proxima Centauri system with a colony ship\, establish the start of a human colony on Proxima Centauri B and return home. \nOne of the purposes of STARFLEET Medical is to encourage increased physical activity\, so our individual goal as participants will be to travel an average of 8000 steps per day. We hope that you choose to join us for our trip to Proxima Centauri so that we can enjoy the journey together while we individually maintain a higher quality of life! \nParticipation rules:\n• The step challenge will take place from March to December\, 2024.\n• The challenge is open to all members of SFI. You do not have to be a member of STARFLEET Medical to participate.\n• Participants can join at any point along the journey\n• Participants will keep track of their own steps each week and then report that total to their Regional Assistant Surgeon General. If you do not know who your Regional ASG is\, please consult the Office of the Surgeon General Current Serving Officers website\n• The only units that will be accepted are STEPS. Please do not submit calories\, activity time or any other units other than steps. They will not be accepted.\n• Participants in regions that are not staffed with an ASG\, can report directly to the Deputy Surgeon General by using this form\n• Steps must be reported within 48 hours of the end of the activity period. Late submissions will not be accepted –THIS IS A HARD DEADLINE – NO EXCEPTIONS.\n• If you are unsure that you will be able to report your steps on time\, report them early.\n• Certificates will be generated within 7 days and returned to ASGs for distribution to participants in their region.\n• Two certificates will be available: 1. Recognition of completion of the monthly goal of 8000 steps per day 2. Recognition of effort for members that were unable to achieve 8000 steps per day. \nWe hope you’ll join us for this long-term challenge \nSeptember 2024: “ARRIVE AT PROXIMA CENTAURI B” \n\n\n\nAs we slowed our speed and moved closer and closer to our destination planet Proxima Centauri B\, our new home came into sharper view. It is beautiful and although the terrain is distinctly different than Earth’s\, there is also an odd familiarity. A pristine blue and green marble teeming with life\, while floating against the stark backdrop of infinite blackness. Our equipment is ready\, our personnel are ready and upon achieving orbit\, we will begin the work of moving humanity onto it’s second home. A move that will ensure the survival of our species in the harsh environment of space and the civilization-ending cataclysms that can wipe out life in a single stroke. After travelling 4 light years in 18 years\, we’re finally able to begin construction of our habitat on Proxima Centauri B. Construction and transportation of personal and supplies will take approximately 5 years. After that time\, a skeleton crew will return our spacecraft to Earth.\n\n\n\n\n \n“Helmsman; initiate orbital insertion around Proxima Centauri B and signal to all ships that we should prepare for transportation of equipment and personal to the surface”.\n\n\n\n  \nThe schedule for September will be:\nWeek 1: September 1st to September 6th\nWeek 2: September 7th to September 13th\nWeek 3: September 14th to September 20th\nWeek 4: September 21st to September 30th\n\n  \nOnce the week ends\, you will total up the steps you have travelled over that period. You will then have 48 hours to submit those steps to your Regional ASG (ie. Week 1 ends on Friday\, July 5th\, therefore you have until Midnight PST on July 7th to submit your steps). Any steps submitted after that time will not be accepted. Call us a phenomenon\, call us one of the most well-attended pop-culture conventions in the country\, and call us the most fan fun you can have in five days:\nDragon Con is where you want to be on Labor Day Weekend. \nBefore Dragon Con\, conventions were limited to specific genres like gaming\, literature\, or comic books. However\, in 1987\, Dragon Con’s founders\, fans of science fiction\, gaming\, and comics\, combined these interests in a single convention. Despite initial doubts\, the event quickly gained popularity\, doubling attendance to 2\,400 by 1989 and reaching 4\,800 in 1990. Dragon Con’s success was propelled by hosting Origins Game Fair ’90 and introducing the Atlanta Comics Expo\, showcasing a diverse range of interests. The convention aimed to offer something for everyone\, and its unique approach revolutionized the convention scene.

DESCRIPTION:“Physiology and Space Exploration”\nGuest Speaker: Phyllis Friello\, Johnson Space Center \nJoin us on August 15th for “Physiology and Space Exploration” with Phyllis Friello\, Johnson Space Center. \nHumans have been living and working in space aboard the International Space Station for almost 25 years. Although this orbiting laboratory has provided us with a wealth of information on the effects of the space environment on the human body\, there are many remaining questions as we venture beyond low Earth orbit. This presentation will provide an overview of the primary risks of expedition class exploration to human physiology and the work underway to meet these challenges. There will be a Q&A after the talk. \nPhyllis Friello is currently the Project manager for the Exploration Medical Integrated Product Team at Johnson Space Center. Prior to her current position\, she was the manager of Science and Research at Space Center Houston\, overseeing the on-site research and ISS science payloads of the Applied Research Collaborative. \nThe Sol Speaker Series features guest presenters who will cover a wide range of inspiring and informative topics on space\, astronomy\, astrophotography\, the Artemis mission\, stargazing\, and tons more! These events are presented via Zoom beginning at 7 pm EST/EDT and includes a 45-minute talk followed by a Q and A session. DESCRIPTION:The STARFLEET International Conference is the organization’s largest annual event and in-person business meeting where members of STARFLEET: The International Star Trek Fan Association\, Inc. gather together to participate in meetings\, information sessions/panels\, a formal banquet\, an awards ceremony\, meet the organization’s leadership\, enjoy various forms of entertainment\, as well as other events. \nThe International Conference is also the annual gathering of some of the organization’s affiliate groups such as the STARFLEET Marine Corps (SFMC) who host a muster for all Marines in the Fleet with its own events\, banquet\, and awards ceremony. The Marines also participate in the opening and closing ceremonies of the IC as well as the Final Mission Ceremony which is dedicated to all the members of the organization that have passed during the year. \nStay tuned more information will be announced soon. \nBook a room at the DoubleTree by Hilton for the conference today!
