SUMMARY:February Sol Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:February 20th 2025\, 8pm GMT/ 3pm EST\n“Power generation and warp drive”\nDouglas Johnston \nDouglas Johnston is a manufacturing technician at Oxford Instruments in the UK. He has a background in physics with renewable energy science and has carried out academic research on Galian Arsenide solar panels\, which are often used on satellites. He has been a Star Trek fan ever since watching Enterprise with his dad as a child\, and has fallen in love with the many shows and films since. \nIn his talk\, “Power generation and warp drive”\, he will discuss Star Trek’s fictional engines in relation to real life fusion and matter/antimatter physics\, as well as taking a look at the Alcubierre drive – a speculative warp drive idea according to which a spacecraft could achieve apparent faster-than-light travel. \nYou must register to get the Zoom link for this event\, simply email capt.barbbarton@gmail.com and put Sol in the subject line or visit our website at https://sciences.sfi.org/sol-speaker-series/

This presentation will provide an overview of the primary risks of expedition class exploration to human physiology and the work underway to meet these challenges. There will be a Q&A after the talk. \nPhyllis Friello is currently the Project manager for the Exploration Medical Integrated Product Team at Johnson Space Center. Prior to her current position\, she was the manager of Science and Research at Space Center Houston\, overseeing the on-site research and ISS science payloads of the Applied Research Collaborative. \nThe Sol Speaker Series features guest presenters who will cover a wide range of inspiring and informative topics on space\, astronomy\, astrophotography\, the Artemis mission\, stargazing\, and tons more!
