SUMMARY:STARFLEET Medical Proxima Centauri Step Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Round trip to Proxima Centauri Step Challenge:\nWe at STARFLEET Medical are very excited to offer this fleet-wide challenge that is open to all members of SFI\, regardless of whether or not you are a member of STARFLEET Medical. Each month\, we will travel along another leg of our journey to explore and establish a human colony in the Proxima Centauri system. \nProxima Centauri is a red dwarf star that is 4.2 light years away from Earth. As of 2022\, two exoplanets are known to exist within the system: Proxima Centauri B & Proxima Centauri D. Proxima Centauri B orbits within the habitable zone which means that liquid water can exist\, allowing for the possibility of life\, or at the very least the ability of the planet to support a human colony. The purpose of our mission will be to travel to the Proxima Centauri system with a colony ship\, establish the start of a human colony on Proxima Centauri B and return home. \nOne of the purposes of STARFLEET Medical is to encourage increased physical activity\, so our individual goal as participants will be to travel an average of 8000 steps per day. We hope that you choose to join us for our trip to Proxima Centauri so that we can enjoy the journey together while we individually maintain a higher quality of life! \nParticipation rules:\n• The step challenge will take place from March to December\, 2024.\n• The challenge is open to all members of SFI. You do not have to be a member of STARFLEET Medical to participate.\n• Participants can join at any point along the journey\n• Participants will keep track of their own steps each week and then report that total to their Regional Assistant Surgeon General. If you do not know who your Regional ASG is\, please consult the Office of the Surgeon General Current Serving Officers website\n• The only units that will be accepted are STEPS. Please do not submit calories\, activity time or any other units other than steps. They will not be accepted.\n• Participants in regions that are not staffed with an ASG\, can report directly to the Deputy Surgeon General by using this form\n• Steps must be reported within 48 hours of the end of the activity period. Late submissions will not be accepted –THIS IS A HARD DEADLINE – NO EXCEPTIONS.\n• If you are unsure that you will be able to report your steps on time\, report them early.\n• Certificates will be generated within 7 days and returned to ASGs for distribution to participants in their region.\n• Two certificates will be available: 1. Recognition of completion of the monthly goal of 8000 steps per day 2. Recognition of effort for members that were unable to achieve 8000 steps per day. \nWe hope you’ll join us for this long-term challenge \nOctober  2024: “TURN THIS SHIP AROUND”\nWe’ve been in orbit around Proxima Centauri B for 5 exciting years. In that time\, we’ve deployed and activated the unmanned cargo that arrived before we did. Within it\, the core habitat and supplies within those cargo shipments were key in the early days as we established humanity’s first ever extra-solar colony. \nCombined with the supplies we transported\, we’ve built out Earth 2.0’s first small city. The matter/antimatter power generator was activated partway through our second year which allowed us to come off of solar and battery power. It also greatly accelerated construction since the power output was significantly enhanced. \nFood production started immediately and has become a successful\, full-blown agricultural industry for our colonists. There were certainly a few challenges and surprises that needed to be overcome\, but the carrots and peas that come out of those farms are as good as the ones I remember from Earth. \nAs exciting and fulfilling as the work here has been\, the time has now come for us to turn our ship around and return to Earth. It’ll be a much quieter trip home since we’ve offloaded our colonists. A skeleton crew will navigate the ship back to Earth so that it can be retrofitted\, retooled and reloaded with colonists that wish to lay down their roots on Proxima Centauri B. \n  \n\n\nThe schedule for October will be:\nWeek 1: October 1st to 11th\nWeek 2: October 12th to 18th\nWeek 3: October 19th to 25th\nWeek 4: October 26th to 31st \nOnce the week ends\, you will total up the steps you have travelled over that period. You will then have 48 hours to submit those steps to your Regional ASG (ie. Week 1 ends on Friday\, October 11th\, therefore you have until Midnight PST on October 13th to submit your steps). Any steps submitted after that time will not be accepted. Please submit steps and only steps\, no other units will be accepted. \nIf you do not know who your Regional ASG is\, please consult the following website: https://medical.sfi.org/office-of-the-surgeon-general/serving-officers/ \nIf your region does not have an ASG\, please submit your steps using the following form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeOFfOYPqv6BRHndwmQhRjE-1na3AJRsCSgEKcldbQtT8yAqw/viewform \n  \nWe’ve successfully setup the first interstellar human colony here on Proxima Centauri B. Now we will turn our ship back toward home so that we can retool and take the next group of settlers to their new home! \n\n\n\n\n  \nDr. Wade Poitras\nDeputy Surgeon General\nSTARFLEET Medical

It is beautiful and although the terrain is distinctly different than Earth’s\, there is also an odd familiarity. A pristine blue and green marble teeming with life\, while floating against the stark backdrop of infinite blackness. Our equipment is ready\, our personnel are ready and upon achieving orbit\, we will begin the work of moving humanity onto it’s second home. A move that will ensure the survival of our species in the harsh environment of space and the civilization-ending cataclysms that can wipe out life in a single stroke. After travelling 4 light years in 18 years\, we’re finally able to begin construction of our habitat on Proxima Centauri B. Construction and transportation of personal and supplies will take approximately 5 years. After that time\, a skeleton crew will return our spacecraft to Earth.\n\n\n\n\n \n“Helmsman; initiate orbital insertion around Proxima Centauri B and signal to all ships that we should prepare for transportation of equipment and personal to the surface”.\n\n\n\n  \nThe schedule for September will be:\nWeek 1: September 1st to September 6th\nWeek 2: September 7th to September 13th\nWeek 3: September 14th to September 20th\nWeek 4: September 21st to September 30th\n\n  \nOnce the week ends\, you will total up the steps you have travelled over that period. This month\, we will be exiting our familiar neighbourhood and entering interstellar space. Seeing Pluto out the window could likely be the last familiar object that we recognize. Every kilometre we travel will now extend the range that humans have ventured.\n\n  \nThis month we will cross the heliopause\, which is the theoretical border of our solar system. It is the point at which our Sun’s solar wind is stopped by the interstellar medium. Essentially\, the point at which matter from our Sun ends and matter originating from the rest of the galaxy begins. By 2024\, only two other Terran spacecraft have reached this boundary; Voyager I and Voyager II.\n\n  \nBy now\, we have travelled in excess of 18 Billion kilometres. Our ion propulsion system has worked like a dream. Although there have been a few small maintenance issues\, the engines have worked as expected. But now the time has come to shut them down. We’ve reached our maximum speed of 1/4 light speed and Newton’s first law will ensure that we maintain this speed all the way to Proxima Centauri. Our inertia will carry us across interstellar space for the next 17 years. We will need to start our engines once or twice for course corrections along the way\, and then again for our deceleration burn\, but for now they have done their job.\n\n  \n“Initiate engine shut down and commence interstellar travel preparations”.

SUMMARY:STARFLEET Medical Reading Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Our new Reading Challenge will be starting on March 1st! Please join the STARFLEET Medical Reading Challenge Facebook Group. You must answer the questions to join per STARFLEET regulations. You will not be permitted to join if you do not answer the questions.\n  \nWith that little bit of business out of the way…..all files will be added to the group soon.\n  \nThe Challenge is simple\, you just read. Read whatever you want\, as much or as little as you like\, any genre\, any age. You will fill out the excel document that will be in files with your name\, SCC number\, ship name\, region\, book title\, author\, and pages read. At the end of the month\, you will simply email the form to medicalr04asg@sfi.org. Certificates will be awarded to everyone who participates. There will also be monthly awards for the most read per person\, per ship\, and per region.\n  \nThere will occasionally be monthly challenges\, for instance\, this month we may give double pages read for Star Trek books\, or Sci Fi\, or historical…etc. Always\, any STARFLEET manual will be double pages scored.\n  \nI am sure there will be kinks to work out\, and I appreciate your patience as we begin this new Challenge. Please tell your friends…and we will have so much fun! “But\, you don’t have to take my word for it!”\n
